Among the many great institutions that define Wisconsin, few are higher up on the list than the classic supper club...

Before the faceless chain restaurants came to dominate the landscape, one-of-a-kind dining establishments with house-specialties and family-run operations were how America treated itself to a night out. This was a time when value was defined by wonderful service, incredible meals prepared from closely held recipes, the sound of warm, friendly chatter and of course the iconic still beloved hand-muddled Old Fashioned cocktail.

Those times still do exist here in Wisconsin and Fond du Lac and the Lake Winnebago Region are at the epicenter of this resurgent slow-dine experience. Dining out was always meant to be a special treat, an evening of fun, food, laughter and friends, all at a cost that allowed the entire family to enjoy.

But what is a Supper Club? Now THAT is a great question. The answer is more in the vibe of the establishment than anything else. There are no hard and fast rules. Generally speaking a supper club serves...supper! Beyond that it is often a glorious mix of a warm atmosphere, great food, not-so-subtle portion sizes, a wide array of hand crafted cocktails and favorite brews. You will know when you have dined in a supper club because you'll say to yourself afterwards, "Now that's what dining out is all about!"

Cedar Lodge, Malone

Cedar Lodge has been a mainstay for excellent food on the east side of Lake Winnebago since the doors opened in 1988. Family owned and operated, the menu ranges from homemade bread and soups, to juicy steaks and succulent shellfish. All dishes are prepared to order, with only the freshest and finest ingredients. Schwarz Supper Club, St. Anna

Schwarz Supper Club is a family-run restaurant now celebrating over 50 years in business. The building started as a one-room tavern and has been remodeled many times to accommodate the large crowds of people that come out for good food and drinks, plus a great time. All steaks are still cut entirely in-house, and feature a secret blend of seasonings on each steak. Big AI Capone's (the former Fuhrman's Hotel built in 1846) is recognized as the Third Oldest Bar in Wisconsin still in operation and is a State Historical Landmark. The Hotel was a stagecoach stop and in the '20s, legend has it notorious gangster, AI Capone, stayed here frequently. Big Al's offers casual dining with paninis, homemade pizza, pasta, Friday fish fry, kids menu, burgers & sandwiches, homemade soups and desserts.
