You can, with Fond du Lac’s unique Talking Country Roads tours!
Your "tour guide" comes in the form of a set of four CDs. Simply slip them into your car’s CD player and take off to explore Fond du Lac County. There’s no guesswork as to what you’ll see. Detailed instructions and route directions are narrated on the CD. You even have a handy map and brochure to follow along.
Narrated and produced as a community service by Fond du Lac radio station KFIZ, the four CDs spotlight the history and landscapes of Fond du Lac County. Each CD guides motorists to a different area including...
Fond du Lac and its nearby "Holyland,"
Waupun, its famous statues and the 32,000-acre Horicon Marsh,
Campbellsport, nestled in the middle of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, and
Historic Ripon, the birthplace of the Republican Party.
The set of four CDs sell for $10.
The project is a partnership between Fond du Lac County, the Fond du Lac Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Chambers of Commerce in Ripon, Waupun, and Campbellsport.
"The goal is to lure visitors to the beauty and history of Fond du Lac County and to alert residents of the vacation material in their own back yard," said Allen Buechel, Fond du Lac County Executive. "We’re proud of what we have here, and think others will find it a unique way to go on a driving tour of our county and the communities within."
History, beauty and lore abound on the tour. While the "tour guide" talks, motorists simply drive, stop, and enjoy the sights.
"Tour participants are encouraged to stop, turn off the car, get out and explore at certain points," Buechel says. "Pack a picnic lunch, dine at one of our restaurants, visit historic attractions, hike a state forest, climb the lighthouse, or photograph birds in the marsh – all are possible on this tour."
