Fond du Lac Lighthouse

The symbol of Fond du Lac:
The Lighthouse at Lakeside Park

The Fond du Lac Lighthouse was built in 1933 and has become the symbol for the city. The lighthouse stands 40 feet high and is perched on the point leading into the harbor from Lakeside Park. The eight-sided lighthouse is of Cape Cod design, with the flagstone base rising 10 feet above ground, and 30 feet frame construction rising above that. The foundation is of stone and cement, such as early farmhouses were build of, with a wooden frame encasing a spiral staircase leading to the top observation deck. A light beacon, still used today, guides boats into the harbor.

In September of 1932 lumberman W. J. Nuss made an offer to the Park Board to erect the lighthouse with the well-known architect, Roger A. Sutherland, donating the drawing and plans. Mr. Nuss' offer was accepted at its next meeting.

All the materials for the construction of the lighthouse were supplied without cost, and there was no municipal charge for the building.

The construction began in May 1933 by Fond du Lac's unemployed and was completed shortly after October of that year. In 1966 the lighthouse was renovated, mostly with city funds, and rededicated on July 3, 1968.
